Installing New Master Cylinder

Im putting a new MC on my 78f150 and Im reading that I need to bleed the MC first. Im not quite sure how to go about this to ensure that when I install it, it works correctly. The paper mentions that Im supposed to get the MC in a vice and then attach some kind of plugs/ports to the two outlets but I dont see those in my kit.

Feel free to email me your experience/knowledge. It will be a couple days until I get to the shop to do it.

its an easy process and the plugs have always been with the new cylinder and the install sheet shows just how to do the bleed process. all you're doing is getting the air out of it and you will still need to bleed the brakes after the install. good luck

another good source is the auto zone web page - they have step by step instructions for your master cylinder replacement. follow the bouncing ball on the web site.

The plugs have not always came with a rebuilt M/C, that is something new that they have started. Years ago you used to get 2 plastic fittings and some rubber tube to send the fluid back into the reservoir. 1st thing to do is throw those plugs in the garbage and go back to the parts store and get a couple of 8" brake lines that fit the M/C and bend them around to fit deep in the resrvoir. Mount it in the vise and fill each reservoir full of fluid. Then you can push the cylinder in to bleed the M/C. Continue this procedure untill there are no air bubbles coming up in the reservoir.

You must be replacing the lines going to the P/V? Yes you can use the old lines.

Yeah- I bought new hard lines down to the valve as well. so i can just use those ones off the old MC i guess and bend them around into the new reservoir. that should be easy enough.

look on the red help board. they used to make a kit with fittings and hose. when i was in the parts business i sold tons of them. i think they were like 6.00. remember the old days when they gave you lines and fittings when you bought a master? the old days were good. these companies could just make all our lives easy and spend the extra 50 cents.

It's called: Bench Bleeding

Be careful when tightening the vice...you can damage the piston from over tightening.

2 ways to do it.

Bend the tube/hoses so they run from the outlets ...and go back into the reservoir filled with brake fluid

or

Make sure you have about an 1" of brake fluid in a jar with both brake hose/tubes/lines submerged into the brake fluid

Fill the reservoirs of the MC and then take a large philips screwdriver and push the piston in numerous time until there aren't any more air bubbles coming out.

Remove the hoses and put the dirt covers back on the for MC assembly.

Keep the MC upright as you handle is
