I know how you feel, Howe. I "joined" the PSD club last September and have learned so much here since then.
In the past, I've rebuilt a few carbs, changed oil, replaced valve cover gaskets, batteries, alternators, starters, done some tune-ups etc... just the small-time generic stuff that almost everyone does when they're in high school. In no way, though, could I be considered a real automotive-oriented individual. I'd buy 'em, drive 'em, and even got to where I'd pay other people to work on 'em for me.
Not any more, brother!! I really enjoy applying the little things I learn while doing inexpensive mods on my PSD, and, being an engineer, I love learning about this diesel world that surrounds these beasts.
Anyway... don't hesitate to post your questions and concerns. Folks are really good and fast to help out, like you've already seen.
Howe, thanks for your help. You and F250_ came through very fast with the Carfax's. Much appreciated. I actually had a monthly subscription (2 months in a row as a matter of fact) but it ran out on April 9. I didn't feel like signing up for a 3rd month so I thought I might find some helpful folks here...and so far I have.
Carfax reports look fine for both. Kinda interested in what the Oasis reports have to say when someone has a chance to look into that.
Once again, thanks for everyone's help and I look forward to contributing to this board myself one day.
Great thread guys!
Tap, get the crew cab. It's a long wheelbase but the only time that is an issue is in a parking lot. You have to go to the end and take up two spaces and walk.
With my dually CC I take up four spaces at the end of the lot. It's the only way that I can get back out again without making contact if someone parks next to me.
We all need our exersize anyway.

I am definitely leaning towards the crew cab. The only issue other than parking is making U-turns. Even the supercab longbed is pretty tough (did it a few times during a test drive), but the Crew? forgedaboutit, unless you got lotsa room.
Its not that bad, really. It take a bit to get used to it but its not hard at all. I got an oasis report, i just called a dealer and talked to the SA and he pulled everything up. Found out the water pump was replaced and the CPS was replaced.

Hey John I notice you use Autoenginuity. I bought one a few years back and have used it occasionally on my gas cars, but have never used it on a diesel. Does it function the same with diesels? I am still a rookie with that tool considering my modest usage of it.
Also, did the Oasis say anything about tranny work? Assuming you ran it on the 4WD Crew cab and not the 2WD supercab it should have indicated something about transmission replacement. The owner told me the auto trans was completely replaced under warranty at 39K miles. Seems odd that wouldn't come up on the report?

Can someone confirm this Oasis report? I spoke to the current (and original) owner and he states that at around 39K miles the transmission was replaced under warranty. He said the work was done at the Ford dealer in Morgan Hill, CA and he claims he has the paperwork to show it. Why would this not show up in an Oasis?

Not to sound rude or anything.
But have you talked directly to your local dealership about this truck?
I'm not knocking FTE or this forum, but it sounds to me like you would have more direct access to the information you are requesting by simply walking in and talking to a service advisor.

Soon you'll understand, why you should have 4x4 platform...
Just use the Off-road cabability, that's what I do.

That's not rude at all. But rather informative.
I wasn't aware that anyone could do that or I certainly would have. I thought you had to know someone or be an employee to get that information on a car you do not own. That's what I love about this forum, always learning something new. Thanks Kwik.
