My Bronco with a 5.8 starts and runs fine when cold. After running and warming up, the starter sometimes drags like if a low battery. I have already replaced the battery and the cables and I still get the same problem. It will drag a little bit and then after a few tries, it cranks up properly. Any ideas?
I had this exact same problem mate. and I have an 84 Bronco XLT with a brand new low comp engine. your symptoms are the same as I had. it felt like the battery was flat when trying to start hot... "rrrru... rrru... rrru..."
I fixed it, by doing the following;
Installing new 750 cca battery.
New cable between battery - starter relay, extra thick
New cable between starter relay & starter motor, extra thicK
New grounding cable between Battery & engine block
New Ground strap between engine & truck chassis.
this all cost me about $200 aud (battery was $150)
I work at Sydney Buses so the mechanics let me at some very thick heavy vehicle starter cable, which i crimped & welded to make the cables listed above.
I put all the parts in at once, so i dont know which bit was the cause, however i did notice once that the cable between the battery & starter relay was *very* hot.
let me know how you go. I have some spare starter cable left over if you want ot pay postage, easily enough for another truck.
Thanks for the info guys. I have already changed batteries and cables so I dont think that is the problem. I will check the timing to find out if that is the problem and no I am not running headers. I do have a rear seal oil leak, to yall think the oil on the starter could be causing this? thanks
