After replacing battery, starter and alternator the truck really drags like the battery is dead. Was starting fine then after sitting without running for a month or so I tried starting. Thought it was just from sitting so I jumped it and it started right up. Checked the voltage after starting and it read 14.53, after I shut it off, ran for 30 min, checked the voltage and it read 12.34. I tried starting and it dragged just like it did before jumping. I took the positive side off and checked for drain but got nothing on the voltmeter. Any suggestions?
Sorry about that, I have a 69 F100 ranger with the 360fe. It does have a voltage regulator and I already replace that. Forgot to mention that in my first thread. I was a little frustrated and posted to quick without much detail.
Is it possible that I didn't allow it enough time to charge the battery back up? While sitting for a month my son did leave the key on so the battery was pretty dead.
I would take and have the battery tested. if you take them too far down for extended amount of time they can have issues from that.
Many parts stores will test a battery for free.
if you had 14.53v while running, the alternator and voltage regulator are fine.
is this battery new, or is this the one that sat for a month without starting?
you say after running for 30 minutes, the voltage was 12.34.
is this with the truck running, or not running?
this is the same battery that sat for a month and went dead. However, it is not even a year old. The voltage was 12.3 after the truck was shut off, I tested the posts on the battery
just because a voltage regulator charges a battery doesn't mean it "shuts off"(for lack of a better term) so it doesn't drain the battery.
Also how are you testing the battery? You need to test it under a load.
Check to see it it drops below 10 under a load like cranking.
Just things to check until someone with more knowledge than myself comes along.
