i just finished installing my rebuilt 390/410. Before the rebuild i had this intermitting problem of the enging dragging when starting. I had replaced the starter...replaced battery cables...replaced battery, i was lost!. After a while i just learned to live with it. But now after the rebuild i expected it to go away ...but no...its still there. Could the distrubitor be hanging up or ?
Mud, if the starter behavior was the same with the first engine as it is with the rebuild now, it would seem to be more likely a electrical issue than a mechanical one- I think I would be double and triple checking all of the starter wires. Are the baattery cables you are using big enough ? DF
The vacuum advance is an easy one to test. Unplug the hose from the distributor, plug it, and start it. If you go that far, you might as well re-time it. Set it at 10 degrees BTDC.
Yes i replaced the starter solenoids as well. A friend told me to disconnect the coil wire when it happed again to see if it made a diff...and it didnt. The engine still drags....starter getting to hot?
I tried to think of a word that best defined my proplem ..sorry for the confusion. My engine is acting like its under alot of load. Not always...now that i think about it the engine is never cold when it happens!
So you turn the key and it starts but it sounds like it's lugging and it only does it after it's had time to warm up? So it's fine when you crank it up the first time of the day?

what tranny do you have? Could you possibly have a converter problem if it is automatice? So, the engine has the load or the starter is cranking hard? Not sure by your description. If it is the starter, do you have headers? It could be heating up from them. Are you sure about your timing? Wait a minute. I had a similar problem with my 390. It turned out my distributor was bad. The plate the pertronix or points or magnetice pick up are on was loose. Was causing all kinds of problems. I thought it was the starter at first. But then the motor started acting like the timing was too far advanced. You may want to check that out.
I do have headman headers...and damn ther like 1/4" away from the starter. Id also heard that ford had a proplem with there distributors...advance sticking or plates not pivoting correctly? I did pull the coil wire...and it still occurs. I dont think its related to the tranny. Im thinking its heat!!!
Sounds to me that your timing is to advanced. Usually when it starts fine cold and then drags when hot , thats a tell tale sign. It could be the starter its self though...my starter is close to the headers too. After changing one every spring I went and got a heat shield for it and wrapped it...you can also wrap your headers but that was more expensive.

What will cause an engine to lug down. Did you go with the same size cam, lifters, and pushrods when you rebuilt it? Have you checked to see if the starter is partially engaged after it gets hot?
