fuel filter

I changed the fuel filter on my 68 ford pickup and now its running really rough and dies at stop signs-the one the parts person sold me resembles the old one but isn't exactly the same....

If your truck is now smoking black from the exhaust you may have disloged some dirt when changing the filter. If the dirt was after the filter it would likely wind up in the needle valve in the carb.Try using vise grips to pinch off the rubber hose at the fuel pump. After the hose is shut off start the engine and let run until it runs the gas out of the line and dies.Remove the pliers then restart the engine. The gas filling the float bowl will often wash the dirt out of the needle valve. It may take more than one try.Hope this helps.

Do you still have the original filter? If so compare the two in a photo & we can help you more easily. If you can't to a pic, can you use words to describe the differences between the filters. Filters are not that expensive, so the easy way to eliminate the filter as a potential cause of your rough-running is to get a filter that does look like your old one, or just buy one at Ford. (I am assuming this is the filter inside the canister on the bottom of the fuel pump.)
