Fuel Filter

Which fuel filter do you prefer the OEM canister type or the one that comes with the built in top?

I have been using the Hastings/Baldwin filter w/cap attached, mostly because they have great rep as a filter maker & that is the brand the parts store I deal with carry & the price is very competitive

I've been using the Racor OEM style filter for the last 550,000 miles on my truck.

You are correct Jason, but a good pre-pump filter would be a part worth adding . I have had a 1-micron CAT spin on filter on mine for years. Strips water and doesn't allow the pump to ever see debris. Side benefit, my OEM filter always looks absolutely new with no water or debris in the canister. I haven't changed that filter since the install of the CAT filter. I have always felt that Ford missed the boat by not installing the fuel filter underneath near the fuel tank.

OEM here too. No issues. I run a fuel pressure gauge after the filter which will indicate a restriction, but I change it more frequently than that so I've not seen a drop in FP yet. FWIW, when I moved the FP sender from pre to post filter, there was no change in the pressures.

OEM all the way.

If you have OEM and you're on the road and have an issue, when you go to a parts store you can use whatever they have, OEM style or integrated cap style, to get you back on the road, even temporarily.

But if you already have the integrated cap style, and you run into a problem on the road, and the only one the parts store has is the OEM style, you'll have to buy a cap to go with it. Hopefully they'll also have a cap in stock. Hopefully it won't cost a ton of money.

Like I said, OEM BABY! (a little Ed there for those that remember Ed)

I disagree on many things OEM with these trucks.
Ford got a lot wrong. Starting with the CPS...second is the fuel pick-up screens in the tank...third (for me )is having the fuel heater on the same fuse as the fuel pump...Etc......

OEM. I swapped once before to the integrated cap, when i got it, i tossed my cap for the OEM, bad move. After a while it started leaking only I didnt know where the leak was coming from. I climbed all over it looking for the leak. I thought it was valve on backside so i changed that, still leaked. I checked all fittings, still leaked. I pulled the fuel filter to make sure of the seal there, it appeared good, still leaked. I finally brought it to Ford and all they did was switch it back to the OEM filter and charged me a pretty penny for a new OEM cap, and it stopped leaking. Ive been running it like that ever since, that was about 200k miles ago....

So it seems OEM wins- now, how often do you change it? How often do you change the pre pump filter?

If you have already answered this on the other thread then allow me to apologize for asking again. What is the part number for the CAT filter and base that you are having success with?
