If you cut the precup opening bigger the injector would spray into the cylinder.
But since you lose starting ability and driveability, you lose more than you gain.
It can be done, but it is not a good idea.
There are better places to put the money that give a better return.
What would the advantage be anyway? It seems to me that the powerstrokes (which are direct injected) have a hard time matching the fuel efficiency of the older IDIs.
I'd be willing to bet that timing would be a huge issue. I doubt that the factory timing adjustments would work. The question would be: what would it need to be set to?
