Yesterday morning I heard my brakes grinding. I tried to check through the rim and there was no pad left that I could see so I planned to do the front brakes this weekend. Last night about 1 AM (thank God no traffic) I get to the stop sign step on the brakes and roll right through the intersection. Scary.
The pedal went all the way down. I drove the rest of the way home very slowly. The pedal would come back to normal for a few blocks then I'd lose the brakes again. This morning I noticed brake fluid on the front passenger rim and tire. How much damage did I do? What would cause the fluid to leak out onto the rim?
Are you going to tackle this yourself or take it to a shop? You will probably need new rotors, calipers and pads. People complain, but I like that my state has inspections.
Just remember when you do Brakes you both Front or both back ,you can't just do one side.
This job isn't really that tough of a thing to do at home.
I would guess that the rotor is pretty gouged out (possibly, Can't be turned down within minimum limit)therefore, you might need a new rotor.
If they are within tolerance an auto shop can turn them down(usually about $10 each).
Pads are sold in sets (around $23.00) make sure you get the *Correct compound make-up for your application. I suggest Semi-Metallic pads.
Now is the time to go over the calipers, from the sounds of it, you have one leaking.
Calipers are Inexpensive, go for a pair of rebuilt ones over rebuilding them yourself.
Brake fluid will be Dot 3 or Dot 4.
If you require instruction on what to do if you decide to do the work yourself,E-mail me and I'll send them to you,or purchase a shop manual and use that.
Hope this helps >
Have a great Christmas !!

Brakes are as good as new. I replaced front calipers ($15 each after returning the core) $30 bucks for pads $92 (that hurt)for a rotor and $10 to have 1 cut. $2 for brake fluid and and what seemed like forever to bleed the lines. Thanks for all the input. It was straight forward and easy enoughto do. Thanks again
