Hi guys, I have a problem. My 99 expediton is leaking brake fluid severly. The brake light came on yesterday and brake pedal started to travel down further than before. Put some brake fluid in master cylinder and light went off, but later in the day light came back on and brake fluid was leaking on driver front side behind tire. Now brake pedal travels all the way to the floor. Needless to say I aint driven it. What do you think is leaking?
I just had the same problem with my 99 Lincoln Navigator. Do you have 4 wheel anti-lock brakes and 4 wheel drive. The problem I had was with the Rear Anti-Lock Brake System (RABS) is located.
Try having someone start the vehile and press the brakes. If it is leaking as bad as you say you will see where it is coming out. My hoses are in good shape and the Chilton manual shows a good picture of it.
That is the good news...bad news is you can't buy just the valve you have to buy the whole master cylinder.
That is where the leak was for mine. It is the valve attached to the master cylinder. It is the valve as you look at the master cylinder in the back. you should have to hoses connected to the master cylinder. Just below the brake reservior.
The valve is about 1 inch long and a 7/8 wrench is required to remove it. Of course after you take the hose off.
Oops. Didn't read your message correctly. Have you identified where the leak is? Remember the master cylinder is above and to the left of the wheel well. I would suggest cleaning the areas off real good and then have some one start the vehile up and pump the brakes. If it is leaking that bad you should see where it is coming out. You might hav eto take the wheel off if the hose to the wheel has a hole in it.
If there has been a brake job on the front recently and they didn't suspend the caliper it could have damage the brake line to the brake caliper.
I sure as HELL hope you guys aren't talking about the pressure sensor valve. If you are you're dealing with a leak that was a major recall on these vehicles and poses a significant threat to burning your vehicle to the ground.
It's the thing on the left of the master cylinder assembly is this picture. Drive directly to your dealer and ask them to attend to it. The service will be free.
And yes, this is what happens if you don't take care of it. I'm not trying to scare you, just erring on the side of caution.
I just replaced my Rear Anti-lock Brake System valve and all is working fine again. I looked at the picture and the part I was talking about has a metal tube comining out of it. Looking at the picture it is to the right of the master cylinder on the top. It is also called the RABS valve.
Below are the recalls on the Lincoln Navigator. You can search this site for your vehicle. When in doubt always consult a professional. However, there was a recall on this type of vechicle that had Ford worried enough to have you come in and have your cruise control disconnected until the could get parts to replace it. The reason was the potential for fire.
Having said that, the part I am talking about was the source of my problem and is now fixed.
