My girlfriend has an '03 Expedition with ~70,000 miles. About 10 months ago the Message center reads "Check Charging System". Girlfriend took it in to some local shop and had the alternator replaced. The message center still reads "Check Charging System" Only its still the same battery from 10 months ago and we have driven the thing everywhere with no problems. Does ANYONE have any suggestions to shut the thing up???
Go out and check the battery voltage with a meter with the truck idling. It should be around 14 volts.
Does it crank strong or does it struggle? If it struggles sometimes, then the voltage could be dipping low enough to set the error message. If this is the case, you may need a new battery or just clean the battery cables.
Did you press the RESET button on the message center after the alternator was replaced?
This is a required step per the service manual to clear the error message.
You can also run the cluster self-test to see what value the PCM is reporting to the cluster for the measured battery voltage. Press and hold the RESET and SETUP buttons while turning the ignition to ON until the display reads TEST. Use the RESET button to advance through each step of the self-test. Look for a display of bAt###.## where ###.## represents the measurement of the battery reading in 1/10ths of a volt.
