It depends on you. How low do you want to go? When you remove leafs from the springs it will lower the rear end down also. How soft of a ride do you want? Sometimes, it's just trial and error until you get it where you want it. Every truck is different. How many leafs do you have to begin with? The rule is to remove every other leaf. I'd start out with two or three and see where that takes you. You can always add or remove them if it's not right.

Not going for big lower,I have bottom 2 out of frt and trk has a good rake now so will drop frt and back equally from here on.Good idea doing every other leaf. Thats what I was looking for. Really nice trk but rides like hell. too buckboard for me. Do you encounter shock problem? If so at what level?
Thanks, Ralph

Four leaves is about the minimum. If you go with fewer than that you risk breaking them.

I removed half of the leaves all around on my 51F1 and put the teflon strips between them. That was over a year ago now and the ride has been so much better I'm glad I did it. I believe I have 5 in the front and 4 in the back, I tried removing every other one like they say to do, but the longer leaves were drooping over the shorter ones. I tore it back apart and left mostly the longer ones in. If you would like me to take some pictures and e-mail you shoot me a PM.

Is there a shock problem w/4 leafs? Don't mind altering brackets etc.

We used to be able to buy shocks with the min and max length specs I believe you still can. I didn't have a problem with the shocks on my truck they were able to collapse down to the rubber snubber. I did have to modify the mounting on the rear when I installed the 9" I used the stock mounting location.

I modified my rear mounts also when I put in a 9". No biggy to change them. I'll see what the travel is when I'm finished with final spring 4 leaf setup. Did you change shocks? I think mine are the originals.

There were no shocks on the front when I purchased my 51, I purchased new Monroe Matics for the front and left the rear because I knew I was going to change out that 4.27 geared rear end. I have to look, but as I recall, I put the new shocks on the rear, and put the shocks that were on the the 69 9" rearend on the front because of the length was right.

Got it, thanks for the input. I have a good idea how to approach it now. Think I'll go with 4 on the rear and set the frt similar with a nice rake.

One thing to consider to keep the rear hight correct, install old style lowering blocks between the spring and the mount pad to replace the removed springs. With the spring on top of the axle they act opposite of the intended way.
