59 F100 Leaf Springs
I have a 1959 ford f100 w/2" wide leaf springs front and rear, and basic shocks. originally it came w/ a straight 6, I installed a V8 (390). The front leaf springs are flat across and almost appear to have a very slight upward arc... if that makes sense. Is it ok to drive it with the leaf springs this way with the additional weight of the 390. It rides little mushy and when braking, the front likes to dive! dive! dive! (and pulls to the right). Would air shocks or air-over- leafs benefit? Any suggestions / Ideas ?? I posted a few pics in my album.

The front leaf springs will actually appear flat or nearly so even when they are serviceable. But that's not to say they are setup for a 390 though. And, they are more than likely just plain wore out. Just as important there's the shackles and bushings and the rest of it. Find out what spring pack combination was used when outfitted with V8 and get that size made up at a big truck shop local to you (saves on shipping $$$) or, order from someone like Eaton or Detroit Spring etc. There are even some folks here at FTE that can make them up for you too.
Pulling to one side is typically a brake issue. Old rubber brake hose is often the culprit, at a minimum. You will probably notice really bad cornering and turns as well with worn springs and such. A few bucks thrown the right way, you'd be surprised how well it will handle. Like a coal cart, but a well behaved coal cart. Shocks won't last very long with lunched springs, and worn shocks in turn is hard on the springs too. Good springs and shocks on all four corners means handling and braking will be much improved. You'll be glad you did every time you drive it.
