Heavy duty alternator

Any body have any info on putting a heavy duty alternator on a 3.ol?

I am looking at putting in a second battery, marine deep cell type to power some additional equipment. I am also interested in information on charging multiple batteries off the alternator.

Any ideas and suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,
Gene

I would say to stay with the oem alternator unless you have problems. The output wiring and connectors are weak in these fords. They melt down pretty easily. If the stock one works, do not look for trouble, you will surely find it. The push on output connectors are a joke. Everyone else uses large bolt output terminals. Mine melted down with oem alternator.

Hi Ken:

What year is your Aerostar? On my '93 3.0L, the output is bolted onto the back of the alterator It's a pretty good sized bolt too!

Good for you, on mine it is two large spade connectors. Pathetic. they burned up and ruined the alternator and wiring. Must be bolted like Hoover dam generators.

Well if he's going to install a battery isolator he's going to be running new cabling anyways.

This is still in the planning stages, to take place sometime this summer. What I envision is two seperate circuits so as Zen mentioned above, some kind of isolator for the additional wiring I will be putting in. I have seen a system on another forum where some people tricked out a 4 wheel drive truck with aditional battery and charging circuitry to run things like a whinch and lotsa lights and oter equipment.

I am not looking to be so radical, but do want to be able to power a pump for a DI water set up and some additional lighting with out draining my main battery. I could probably get away with stock, but want to do this for peace of mind. I don't want to finish a job and not be able to start my van.

I just now saw this post, the stuff needed for a 2nd battery with isolator, etc. is all available from Recreational Vehicle stores. It's common on an R.V. to have 2nd battery from the factory set up in this way. Should be easy to duplicate on an Aerostar.
