i was looking at the painless wiring harness for i believe 73-77 pickups and i drive a 78 i was wondering if anyone knows what kind of modifications if any i would need to make to this harness to make it work on my truck i assume its got to be pretty close, any imput?
did a Painless on my '69, and another on a 75. Not that tough of an install. Main concern would be the cluster pigtail wiring. If you can get a factory diagram of the pinout of the connector, shouldn't be much trouble. None of the wiring is included for the factory air on your truck(if so equipped) so you might want to hang on to that portion of the harness.
Anyone have any experience with Kwik Wire Universal Harness's?
I do like the centech wiring description. Some little things like not including the wiper wiring or windshield wiring is a little disappointing since the Ford Harness starts at $395. You would think those would be included. Not including switches, I think the complete harness would be close to $450 if you bought the wiper and windshield washer wiring.
The only reason I was looking at a cheaper universal harness, was that I have old harnesses, one almost complete and another complete harness from a 79 Bronco and a 79 F250. So I would have all the connectors and all that to connect to a universal Harness. Would it be a pain to do? Just something about re-installing a 30 year old harness doesn't give me a good piece of mind.

if you have the connectors & such for your truck, a 12 circuit painless will get the job done. One thing to be aware of, most of the universal harness' are based on gm color codes, or all black....makes it kinda tough when doing diagnosatic work. The dedicated Painless harness for a ford truck is based on ford color codes. Makes it a lot easier to install if you are going to use the factory pigtails.
I would like to have more than 12 circuits for future use if I ever want to install power windows, locks, power seat, added electronics, etc. This is the one I was looking at
i was hoping not to go down this road, but after pricing the ford kit with painless, that centech with the options savse a truck full of dough. gonna have to call them monday. Dan
I read this thread and checked out all the wiring kits listed above as I am interested in completely changing out entire electric system (lots of shadetree engineering). I would like to know where to get the factory pigtails/connectors to use with any of these kits? If I am replacing the wiring, I might as well replace the 30 year old connectors. I have a 78 F100 btw...so any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated!
I looked at the centech and read the description but I wasnt clear if they were all included. So stuff like the instrument cluster connector, ignition module connectors, etc are all included? If so, thats a sweet price for all that.
