Relative to this step from the post above... 6) Remove lock cylinder gear (snap ring pliers required). It is down in the hole that you took the lock cylinder out of.
I got the lock cylinder removed and peered down the hole. I don't see a snap ring. Maybe a need a flashlight!?
Answering my own question, indeed there is a snap ring down there which will become much more visible once the ~30 year-old grease is cleared away. Pic tells the story....
i am having problems timing the bronze gear it will either work on acc or start but not both yet.
I assume you have a 1988, per your profile? Have you tried adjusting the position of the ignition switch? 2 screws or bolts or nuts, loosen and slide the ignition switch closer or farther from the steering wheel.
Under #20, I'm talking about the actual electrical part that is the ignition switch. It is located at the front end of the rod that is connected to the key tumbler. I believe it is 2 nuts you loosen to adjust it.

they are a pain to get timed properly.
what I do is set the last tooth of the key cylinder gear in between the last two teeth of the rack that connects to the actuator rod. 99% of the time that times the gears properly for both start and accessory positions
got it i will try that this afternoon. that might have been the problem with the p.o. the rack was replaced and they had to put a push button in and it went through 4 starters before they gave up on it.
tried to adjust the switch it worked when i had it apart but not when i put it back together. is it the same switch for tilt and non tilt? my little lever to unlock the ign switch just fell apart is that easy to fix or should i say screw it and get a column in the wrecking yard? also the start part of the switch is real stiff is that normal? sorry for the questions. i am buzzed on pepsi at 7 am before everyone else wakes up.

Reason: more info.
Looks like you abandoned your other threads and jumped in on this one.
So the ignition switch works when not mounted to the base of the column? You have all positions when manually moving the switch: accy, off, run and start? That’s what I asked in your other thread. It does not work when bolted up either because it in not adjusted correctly or the actuator is not timed properly at the the lock cylinder.
No there is only one ignition switch. It does not matter if it is a tilt column or not.
Adjust your ignition switch down below the dash. It moves up and down the steering column, so push it all the way up towards the steering wheel as far as it goes so that the rod is pushed far enough to go to the ignition position.
