My ignition battle continues

The actuator rod, (the rod that links the switch to the keyswitch assembly) has a LOT of play in it. I cannot position the switch so that I can both start the truck and get the ignition to work in the accessory position. Where might all of this play be coming from? Would replacing the rod most likely fix this problem? Where else might the play be coming from? The upper actuator has been replaced twice, most recently about two years ago so I know that it's ok. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

If its two years old, how do you know its good? That actuator can break in a week. The rod cant really get any play. If the switch is stiff, it can flex some which can have the effect of play.

i am thinking that I need to replace ALL of the old components to get it to where it will be like new. I actually paid a mechanic to fix it who said he did AND charged me for the new part, meaning, the rod. I now realize that he simply moved the switch closer to the steering wheel, making it start and run normally but by effect disabling the accessory position. Originally because of the play, I was able to have it enable the accessory position but had to puch on the top of the steering wheel to get it to start. I have disassembled the steering column before to change the upper actuator the first time, around 1999. It has been replaced once since then.

Are all of the internal parts relating to this mechanism, i.e., the rod and the actuators still obtainable through Ford? I might replace the key cylinder too if that might help.

I think they are. The cast piece at the top, if broken, can still push on the rod some. So if the bottom was adjusted, it could start, but I dont think you could shut it off. There is a little gear thing in there that the tumbler turns. If it were off one tooth, it might have the effect you have. (not enough travil) It was a PITA to install. Ithink you will just have to tear into it and find out what you got. One tip; the two pins that the tilt steering pivots at- come out by threding a 8-32 screw in and pulling on the screw.

I remember having to pull those pins but thank you for telling me the size screw that they take. I am living at a university and don't have all of my stuff here so knowing those little details helps a lot.
