Best potential for mpg?

Has anyone seen a trend for which year seems to net the best mpg with the addition of mods? I'm in the market for a crew cab 4x4 with auto tranny and will do a fair amount of dead heading unloaded. So far I love what I hear about the 7.3L and would like any thoughts on whether any particular year seems to have the best potential or are all 7.3L's pretty much the same?

The only trend is that 4wd and automatics net you the worst mileage.

2wd and 6-speeds get you the best.

After that, it's all about driving style. Keep your RPM's under 2K for best mileage.

As for the mods, an economy tuned chip will give you the biggest results in increased mileage. Also a bed cover will help best on the highway.

I have a 4X4 350 with the 6 speed. Mixed city/highway I get 16.5 mpg, highway I get 18.5mpg through my all time best of 22mpg driving down to North Carolina.

I have a 2x4 F350 CC LB with the 6sp and with the few amount of mods I've done, I'm seeing between 20-22mpg hwy and 17-19 city. You can't beat the venerable 7.3L.

My words (and my truck) exactly! It even looks like the same color (prairie tan).

Mine is consistently right around these numbers (2000 psd)....

All time highest on a road trip (unloaded) 24mpg......Usually 20 to 22 though.

Not bad for a 444cid engine........

We are talking real mileage.... not what the lie-o-meter says.

Ok, then you drive downhill both ways. I don't think those numbers are possible with a CC 4x4 PSD. Essp considering you prbly have 4.10's with a 6sp?

IIRC dually had the 4.10's, and all SRW had 3.73s in a f-250 or 350 truck.

My truck gets like 13.5mpg on the highway, and about 13mpg mixed unloaded. Pulling a van trailer I get about 11.5-12mpg.

I don't see how it's possible to almost double my best just because they have a SRW.

I have 3.73 gears as well.

They aren't, unless this is a new record for a stock 4x4. Stranger things have happened I guess.

However, it's a matter of how the truck is filled up every time. If you fill up until the gas station pump automatically clicks off, then yes you will get skewed mileage results like this. The pump clicks off because of foam, not fuel, has reached the filler neck. Most folks don't realize that you can still fit another 3-8 gallons of fuel in there. And the ones who do really don't have the time or patience to slowly dribble fuel until it's all the way up to the neck. A 10 minute fillup turns into 30 minutes at the pump.

Now calculate mileage based off that big of a swing, and you can see how suddenly a truck that is actually getting 17-18 mpg on the highway can show well over 20 with hand calculation.

That's why for everyone who tracks mileage religiously, the harpoon mod is your best friend.
