When I first got my truck, I was figuring out mileage and it said i got 22mpg. This was like the second fill-up I had and I thought I had a freak truck. Then the next time i had 13 and i could not figure out why. Turns out it was because i did not fill it the same amount both times. I honestly have no clue how you are getting that number out of a cc 4x4.
Alright, BowDown......I didn't appreciate the initial challenge.......It kind of smacked of me telling tall tales......but I can see your point...and your questions. And for your information, I've posted those numbers in previous threads. The OP asked about "empty" weight since he's going to be doing a lot of traveling or driving unloaded....so I went on the "unloaded" assumption.
This is my daily driver....as well as the vehicle I tow or carry my slide-in camper with....so I've got 40000 miles of observation to go on.........That's enough to make a judgement, right?........And the truck is still bone-stock.
It's a: 2000 F250 psd 4X4.....Crew-cab with auto tranny......75r16 p265 Uniroyal tires......No add-ons, leveling kits, airbags, lift kits, cold-air intake, larger exhaust---anything. All stock.
On my daily commute average (22 miles one-way), which is about 30% town with several stops and about 70% highway.......I get 16mpg on the low end, and 18mpg on the high end.......
On long trips (250 to 350 miles one-way) UNLOADED....With just basic gear on board, but no towing or no heavy carrying.......I've gotten just under 20mpg on the low end, and 21 or 22mpg on the high end. The all-time highest that I've recorded was coming back from Beaufort, NC to Charlotte, NC......but I refueled in Thomasville.......Mostly flat land the first half with mostly long rolling, low hills after The Raleigh-Durham area. It was right at 24mpg on that run.
My driving habits are moderate, to say the least. I rarely put the cruise-control at above 65mph, and 65mph is the most efficient speed for my truck, as it holds the RPMs right at about 1800 or 1900.......Highest torque, moderate horsepower. On that one run, I actually had it set at 70mph where the speed limit called for it (after Durham)........
I don't know.....the weather was good.....Maybe I caught a tail wind part of the way, but it just chugged along and that's what I got on that trip.
I don't do anything special with the truck. I check the oil at fuel stops, top off when needed, and change the oil every 7500 miles (Shell Rotella 15W-40)........I only occasionally put diesel kleen in the tank.
I'm not going to tell tall tales when someone is asking a serious question about the diesel.......the "joke" threads are in a different forum. I don't want to **** off the diesel gurus like amiller93 or Kwikkordead either.
Well thanks for the clarification. I would **** a brick if I ever got 24mpg. LOL I would go back to the same place i bought fuel last for sure.
My truck was only getting like 7mpg when I first bought it. It must have been sitting awhile. I'm happy to get 13mpg now, but I guess it gives me hope for getting more if people really are getting that much more than I can get.
My best so far has been 21.07 mpg in my 02 F350 CC SRW 3.73 ls 6-spd, and that was the tank after a new clutch and trying Howe's fuel additive. My 99 with the same specs best was 20.1 using a Stanadyne additive.

All that being Said What is your average over that last 1,000/5,000 or 10/000 miles?!! My 01 CC LB Lariat 4X4 averages 14.4 with the Hypertech on Stage 3 over the last 5,000 miles. (See Mods) I've been told a DP tuner will increase Fuel Mileage. I installed one on my 01 today in about 3 weeks I will tell you if it will!! I have my doubts though!!

10-4, bro.....Sorry if I sounded a little testy......I get in the political debates here in FTE all the time and get told I'm as full as s--t as a Christmas turkey, and just shrug it off.......And to be fair to you, I was asked in previous threads to clarify or double-check..........I've had a rough week........
Anyway, I just take it easy on the pedal and cruise....and sometimes, the truck REALLY comes through for me.....and I about s--t a brick when I got the 24mpg numbers........and again, that was a one-time deal........Mostly 20, 21, or 22.......(at the most)......
Towing......Did a run to the coast (310 miles) with 2,500lb slide-in camper on the truck and towing a trailer with about 2,500lb total......going 60 or 65.......got just a tad under 14mpg.........Not a heavy load, but performed pretty well.........

I haven't really crunched the numbers on that (1000 or 5000 or 10000)......Just trips or weekly commute fill-ups.......Used to do this every week......Now every couple of weeks.........But ALWAYS on longer highway trips......
I'm stock, so I haven't any experience with chip setups, etc.......From what I understand, though, the chip setups really only give you the edge on mileage when you're doing heavy towing........not empty......
I'm sure someone will jump in and contradict me on the "chip" assumption...
speed is the key!! My 02 made 22 a few weeks ago, but I was on a two lane road with the cruise around 65. Most of the time the cruise is in the 85 to 90 range and I get 17 to 19. Going to Texas a couple of years ago I made a little over 23 doing 75, but that leg of the trip was all downhill, and had a little push from the wind. (lie o meter read 28)

Reason: add info
I own an '02, 350, cc, sb, sw, 7.3, 3.73, 65k miles, bone stock and I get about 19 mpg on the highway driving 70 mph. I haven't determined my city mileage. I have had some trips when my mileage was better and some when it wasn't as good. Can't say enough postive things about the 7.3, it is simply a reliable, proven enginge.

I agree with Steve on this one. When my truck was stock, bone stock, I got the best mileage. One trip to WVA I got 25MPG. Cool September temps, 55 MPH speed limit. At best on the highway now I get 20-22 MPG. I keep my highway cruise set at 68 mph about 1900 RPM. I'd say if your truck only gets 11-13MPG unloaded, either it's broke or it's your driving style.
You want mileage, no short trips (you're warming up almost 4 gallons of oil and closing off your exhaust with the BPEV until the truck warms up) I see about 10/14 MPG during warm up.
Turn off your air conditioning, your air runs in every position but face floor and off.
Slow down, anything over 2000 RPM is a killer, 50 to 60 MPH can gain you 5 MPG over 70 MPH.
No lifts, no big tires, these also kill mileage, that said I'm running 285's on mine. It makes the odometer/speedometer right on accoriding to GPS.
I run a scan gauge so I can instantly see what is happening on my mileage.
55 MPH gives me 19/20 MPG with the below set up. I wish our 6 speeds had a little higher ratio in 6th so I could run about 72 at 1900 RPMS.
You really want mileage drive an older VW TDI, 70 MPH yeilds 50 MPG on summer fuel, but you couldn't put a slide in on it. Or drive through 2 feet of snow, or carry 5 full sized people in comfort...

First partial tank with DP Tuner set on Eco. second Position. 340.8 miles and used 23.205 Gallons. That's 14.687 MPG that's up slightly from my average over the last 7 fillups averaging 14.349 MPG. I didn't drive it as hard as I normally do. The tranny shifts kind of weird!!

What about in DEFROST? I never thought the AC system ran in other that AC or MAX AC position. I normally run with the FLOOR/VENT setting going at speed 3 or 4 (max).
If the AC pump is running even for the heat, I have to find that engineer and kick 'em somewhere tender!!
Can we/someone confirm this configuration? (no offense to Spamjohnson, I just find that setup... SILLY at best)

He is correct...If your have the haynes manual look at the wiring diagram. Kwik turned me on to this as well. I now leave mine in the vent position, unless my toes get cold!
Easy enough to check on any vehicle--start it up, pick a climate control setting, watch the compressor clutch. I think most if not all A/C vehicles run the AC on defrost to lower the humidity of the airflow for faster defrosting.
