The AC compressor dries the air as well as cools it, which is a big help in a humid cab with fogged up windows. Anytime the selector switch is on AC or defrost including the positions with both floor & defrost, etc. the compressor is running. On mine, that leaves vent only and floor only (not the "mixed" settings) as the only selections that don't run it. Hope that's not as counfusing as it sounds to me (still early, no coffee yet!!).
As far as mileage, my stock '02 2WD CrewCab Auto got almost 17 MPG on the interstate doing 75-80 mph (calculated roughly 400mi/24g). I can see how keeping it at 1800 RPMs would give you quite a boost. For me, I'd rather get there over an hour sooner (500 mile drive assuming 80 vs. 65) and pay for it.

Couldn't agree with you more Joe!! I'll be keeping my selector out of the mixed mode settings for my commute, but when I drive back to see family (3500 mile roundtrip) i'm gonna run my 78mph pace and save myself about 5hrs each way!!
Mileage is great but sometimes you just gotta git 'r done!
Put a 90 gallon tank in the back hooked up to your fuel fill neck, fill em both up and dont worry about it. Whats a few hundred bucks? You might have the wrong truck if your sweaten fuel mileage.
not really I've checked the milage on 95%+ of the fuel I've used in over two million miles. If I see a significant milage drop I know something ain't right.Could be as simple as a low tire clogged filter etc or something more serious
I don't know about folks not liking you......Not believing you, however, is another thing.....
Agreed. The highest MPG we've known was (IIRC) Markadeck in his 2WD Super Duty. He would consistently get 22+ on the highway, but he drove SLOOOOWWW. If you're calculating that MPG by hand then congrats to you. If you're going off the lie-o-meter that's overhead... mine used to say that I was getting 32MPG
So, how do you drive and how are you calculating you MPGs?

RIP, Mark.....
Jeez! This thread is over 2 years old!
I'm just remembering the skepticism I got when I said I hit 24mpg exactly ONCE........And that's in an F250......!........
Just took a trip from Salisbury to Carteret County.....300 miles and change.......Not towing anything.....Foothills to flatland on the way down there.....Flatland to foothills on the way back......2 guys....3 dogs....couple hundred pounds of stuff.........Maxed the cruise control at 65mph.....Less than that a lot of the time, mostly highway.......
2000 4X4 crew-cab 7.3L diesel. Stock.
Anyway........19.1mpg on the way up.......19.4mph on the way back......
Back in March I had to drive from Denver to Baltimore and then back. Trip MPG average was right at 19, and that was going 70mph on 285s at almost max pressure. I'm not saying he definitely didn't do it, but how many times have we seen high MPG numbers claimed off the lie-o-meter? Plenty. If my truck had truly been getting 32mpg back when I bought it you'd have NEVER gotten me to change anything on it except for repairs, etc.
That's why I checked it with the calculator. But, it must be the final drive ratio that gives the mpg because when I hook up my toy hauler, the mpg drops way off. When I am not hauling, I do enjoy running 650 miles between fill-ups.
WOW... that is AWESOME!! Can you give us details of your rig? 250 or 350? Crew, Super, or Regular cab? 4x4 or 2WD? Also any mods you've done. Better mileage is something we're all shooting for, and knowing how you do that would be great!
It is an 03 Dually, F-350 Crew Cab, 8 ft bed 4 X 4. I bought it used with 75k on it. It had been wrecked, but, the guy that had it rebuilt never told me how badly it had been wrecked. But, the price was right and I needed SOMETHING to haul my toy hauler. When I first got it, it was averaging 12.6 mpg town or hwy - didn't matter. So far, the only thing that has been done id BTS put a chip in it for me and his custon Torque Converter and valve body to work with the chip. Also, he installed a 4" exhaust and a large oversized tranny cooler. I run nothing but Royal Purple synthetic oil in everything. Since I bought the truck used, I am not really sure of the differential ratio but I suspect that it has the longest legs available because, as I said, the mpg REALLY drops when I am hauling.
On last Thursday, it shelled the turbo on my wife (on her way from Tulsa to Ohio) and BTS loaned me a stock turbo to get her back on the road. When I get back to the states (currently in Russia), I am going to BTS and get them to install an H2E and got totally through the tranny. After that, we (me, her, the toy hauler and the Harley's) are heading for Yellowsatone and then California. After I get the Turbo and the tranny done, I'll let you know then about the mpg.
I forgot to mention, I also run nothing but Michelin tires all the way around and I generally keep them 5- 10 psi over max. By profession, I am a mechanical engineer and I understand that deforming the shape of the tire takes energy. By keeping them slightly over pressure reduces the deformation and makes them run cooler.
In the end, the synthetic oil (I know this helps mpg from all my testing of the oil and from my other vehicles), the chip, the valve body, the exhaust, the t/c, tires, ... everything together has made dramatic improvements on the mpg.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot again, K&N Filter that the previous owner installed.
