I went to check the level this weekend & i can't get the plug out. I tried a 2 ft. breaker bar & socket but the socket broke clean in half. I have a 4 ft. breaker & stronger sockets but i'm worried about breaking the case. Has anyone had this happen before & how did you get it off ?
IDK about your trans but when I have a plug that won't budge I use a little heat. Maybe just driving it will warm the tranny enough to loosen it. Can you get an impact on it?
Thanks for the replies. I'll try the heat with the longer breaker bar. I have worked on the big truck transmissions for years & never had one stuck like this.
lefty loosey, righty tighty - right
thanks, john
How long have you had the truck? Have you had the plug off before? I was just wondering if someone before you might have put it back on w/ JB Weld on the threads or something like that.
I've had the truck since fall of last year. This is the first time I tried to pull it. I don't have any leaks & the transfer case is at the right level so I don't think I have to worry quite yet. The plug looks non abused, but not new, with no signs of any sealant or JB weld. If I get it out it will be coated with Never- sieze. I'll mess with it this weekend & i'll let you know how I make out.
take a wire brush and clean up the head of the bolt, then go out there and blast it with penatration oil. id do it a few times a day. then if you still cant get it to budge then do what jim said get ur torch and get that mother red hot.
Mitch
don't get it red hot. aluminum will puddle up onthe ground with no warning what so ever! ask me how I know! I would use heat as your last option. and then if you do I would use a propane torch and not a cutting torch unless you are very skilled with it.
