ok i'm not much of a technical machanic. i have a 83 bronco with a 302. the prevouse owner put a heavy duty axil in the rear. told me not to use it in 4 wheel drive. said the parts to change the front would be like $250. is he correct about not useing the 4 wheel drive.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Mar-02 AT 10:45 PM (EST)]The guy probably put in a rear axle with a different gear ratio than the original. That would be why he told you not to use 4WD, as you may now have two different axle ratios, and all the drive line components, front and rear will be under an extreme strain, trying to turn at different speeds! DON'T DO IT - you will break something - maybe the transfer case, and that's big bucks!
Find out what he installed - ask him about the gear ratios...
I hope you got a good, cheapo price on this rig, as it's no fun to have a 4WD and not be able to use it off the road! The real fun begins when you can find some great dirt trails, shift into 4wd, and head for hills!
