Ok, seems like an easy task, right? Well, the guy at the auto parts store pulled the wrong fluid for me - I told him "no dual rated Mercon / Mercon V" but that's what I got.
I was at a friends house working on this at 2 A.M. when we discovered we had the wrong fluid. Ran out to a 24 hour Walmart to get some acceptable fluid - NO SYNTHETIC ?@#$?@#$%#%
So, we filled it with Valvoline ATF (non-syn) fuguring I'd just drain it again soon and put in the good stuff.
Drove home (aout 50 miles, highway speed 60-70).
Checked things under the truck - transfer case was hot to the touch - could put my hand on it for about 5 seconds before it became too painful. Out side temps were about 40-45 F. Light rain. No 4-wheel drive.
Q1: Will the dual use Mercon/Mercon V work in the transfer case?
Q2: Should the transfer case get that hot? If I had to guess I'd say it was 130 - maybe 150? Wish I had a point and shoot thermometer!
Q3: Checker auto told me the specks are 4.01 pints of fluid! 4.01!?!?! What idiot came up with that.
Q4: Why doesn't Walmart carry any good ATF?
Q5: Why aren't there and good 24 hour parts shops in rural Minnestoa/Wisconsin?
Mercon V will probably work I used Dex Mercon III in mine. Just changed it last week. However I filled up until the top plug overflowed to insure it was full then plugged. I really don't think M V is an issue on the t/case as long as it is full. The fact that is hot makes me wonder is it full to the top plug. If it is I would just change it again and add Mercon III. But then I never felt mine, just change and drive so who knows how hot mine gets. Don't really care. It is a self clearing device. If it gets too hot it will automatically clear the issue and cool off while you are sitting on the side of the road. 150 isn't too hot. Bearings and lubricant can run up to 170/180 and still be ok. Walmart,, Does the ATF come from Japan,, if so they might have it.
24 hr shops. Been there, do you have any towns in the area,, there you will find parts shops. They won't be in the sugar beet fields.
Ford has now said that Mercon V (and dual use fluid) is safe to use in the 4R100 & transfer case.
2 years ago they said is wasn't.
Nothing has changed internally.
You decide.
The fluid is only there to lubricate the a few gears gears and the chains in the case. It is a very simple piece of equipment and relies on no fluid pressure to lubricate & cool the internals. Put in the M1 and move on to your next task in life.

vettdrv, Wal-mart is known for its products sourced from CHINA, not Japan.
Forget using ATF all together. Royal Purple makes this manual transmission gear lube called Synchromax. Its thicker then ATF and I would guess provides much better lubrication because of that. Anyway its designed for manual transmissions and transfer cases. I used it in the transfer case in my Jeep and haven’t had any problems.
