Confused About Engine ID

I was at the scrap yard yesterday and found a 78 4x4, VIN# F14HNCF3838. Darn, I'm having a hard time identifying what motor is in it. (I cannot get back there for week or so, so getting any numbers off the block is not an option right now.)

The VIN decoders I have accessed tell me it's a 351. No info telling whether its a 351M or 351W. It looked larger than a 351W but I have not looked closely at a 351w for years so my perspective is messed up.

At first, I thought it was a 'big block' (forgive me those of you who are sticklers for the proper series number) so I assume it might be a 351M. The guy at the scrap yard tells me it is a 360, but this dissagrees with the VIN. HELP!

Steven

It's a 351M ~~ F14H ~~ H = 351M

NO 351W's in F Series trucks till 1980

1976 last year for FE engines in F series trucks.

351M, Hmm...

Thanks for the info. Can you direct me to information / resources to help me decide if I want to swap this motor? I'd sure like to keep the 4 speed in my F100 (if it will hook up.)

Do a search or post another thread asking about engine swapping.

If it actually is a 351M you don't want to swap it in. The 351M was a low compression underpowered smog motor with practicaly no redeeming qualities...
