Don't expect any power gains at all from a smog delete kit - which are illegal, BTW.

You will gain 0.0001 HP at redline by deleting the smog kit.

It's illegal to remove any emissions-related component from any vehicle - in all 50 states.

how can you say something is ILLEGAL when its not, does the EPA come to your house look under you truck and write you a fine for taking your catalytic converter off? Something can't be illegal if it isnt enforced and there is no state that I know of that goes and checks under cars to see if people have emissions systems. Only people who check that are when you get it inspected and if you have to follow emissions regulations in your are then you shouldnt take it off. Wher I live, if you live in Waller county, Texas they dont test for emissions. California is the only state with cooky extra emissions requirements for both motorcycles and trucks, and even lawnmowers have california models! Love the state of California and I visit it often, but when I am there I don't breathe any easier than I do here in texas and I don't see in the sky any farther so I think all that is rediculous. Sorry off topic but seriously something cant be illegal if absolutey no person enforces it!

Oh but it certainly is illegal. That's like saying "I can steal whatever I want from this store because it is perfectly legal unless I get caught." It doesn't work that way. Sure people remove emissions equipment all the time but it doesn't make it legal. California has stricter laws on emissions because of the amount of cars there and the photochemical smog problems they have. Imagine what it would be like if they did not have those stricter standards...

I love how everyone just jumps right in and automatically dismisses the fact that I want to do something to my own personal vehicle.First off, thanks bassproguy.....people like you make the world a better place by jumping in and taking the reigns.Secondly, he's right....I live in the state of florida and the only think they look at is your paintjob....if your truck is loud...most cops tend to drool around here.Thirdly, your telling me the removal of the smog pump system will not help, even minimally. However, I know people who have done this and the fact that there is almost no resistance alone on that pulley does give some improvements, like say...for instance, a GenI lightning that does 11.50 flat (peddling it)....he only does that because he doesn't have a race approved cage...or else he'd go faster.I think I'm gonna do this swap just to see...I'll let you know how it turns out in the long run.....oh yea, and thanks for the opinions...no matter how negative.

Smog pump takes no power to turn. I have removed them before.. made absolutely no difference whatsoever. Now remove the big fan off he front of the motor.. that makes a difference!!!

Nice double post there.

If you register your vehicle and pay taxes on it, You DO NOT OWN YOUR VEHICLE.

Sorry.

Everyone should do his/her part to keep the air cleaner. It is a fact that un-smogged cars/trucks dump pollutants. I will not throw stones but the attitude of "It's mine and I can do what I want" Is a self centered one. You would not or should not toss toxins in your back yard just because you own it. There are better ways to gain a few HP

Bassproguy07 - That's about the most ignorant argument I've ever heard on any legal related discussion.

Just because the EPA is horrible at enforcing a particular law down to the individual consumer level doesn't invalidate the law. It still carries a $20,000 to $50,000 fine per instance, possible jail time, as well as a criminal record on a federal level.

The same applies to speeding. If you drive 85 in a 65 zone daily and don't get caught, that doesn't make your 85 legal - it's still illegal - you just haven't gotten caught. Two totally seperate concepts and one cannot be used to validate the other except by the ignorant.

Flaresidethunder - Regarding the law both of you are wrong. But you're right, it's your vehicle and you can do anything you like to it. While it's very unlikely there will be consequences, if you are caught through sheer luck or whatever, the penalties can be stiff as I've outlined above. Whether you live in Florida or California or Michigan. Makes no difference - it's a federally written law with federally described consequences.

Also, I've dyno'd engines with and without smog equipment before, and these days it really makes no difference whatsoever in power or performance.

Performance DID significantly suffer in the late 70's and early 80's when this stuff was introduced, because the materials and methods were grotesquely inferior as compared to what we have today.

Today you can buy off the shelf, a catalytic converter that's 30% more efficient in trapping emissions than the stock part, AND it can be ordered with 4" inlets and outlets. In 1979 such parts didn't exist, which is why for years most people have determined emissions equipment to be directly opposed to hot-rodding, performance, et al.

Today that's no longer true. It's not very difficult to build yourself a streetable, 1000HP V8 big block and pass any emissions testing facility anywhere in the US - even the dyno-based systems. I've done it, and it's not rocket science.

I wonder how no one throws out any arguments about the lack of catalytic converters? After all, don't cats and smog injection systems go hand in hand? What does that smog pumps do anyways?Pump hot air from onside of the engine to the other then out the tailpipe?woopdee.I know I'm probably setting myselfup for the treehugging hotrodders tha are about reading this.....but I don't care.As for the whole registering and paying taxes on my vehicle?Just don't get me started on politics......it'sjust another way for the government to rob us is all.

Were not starting on politics.

The purpose of the smog system is to recycle gas expeled from the vehicle.

CATS are not performance deadining anymore, they make performance cats. A lot of vehicles run worse with their smog systems taken out, because they are computer controlled. Thus, sometimes you loose power.

Cats and smog injection do not go hand in hand. they are 2 seperate polution controll devices.
Cats have been around for a while, a guy here in michigan died about a year ago, he invented them, or a version of them, hes from the montrose area.

Its just a cylinder packed with materials to burn up bad gasses.
The new ones are high flowing and efficent.

I can so keep goign on this....
