overdrive?

Ok weve been running the truck with the OD on for a long time, and my friend turned it off and the truck seemed to shift a lot better. I didnt know he had it on this whole time and am wondering what the overdrive actually does. When it is on it seems that the truck holds the gears a lot longer than with it off, so I am assuming that is what it does. I have a pretty good idea about them but am just wanting to know for sure. Also was does it improve gas mileage to have it off?

I noticed my truck runs better when i leave it off, i only turn it on when i get on the freeway,

all overdrive is, is an extra gear, for highways and high speeds to save gas and your engine, however your tranny could be acting up, (like mine) and not shift correcly when you have the overdrive on.

It's called "overdrive" because in most vehicles, the top gear is the only one where the output shaft of the tranny is turning faster than the input. In the AOD and E4OD, 3rd gear is a 1:1 drive ratio, and OD is less than that. 5-speed manuals typically have 4th as a 1:1. The output shaft is being driven "over" the speed of the input.

As far as gas mileage.....in city driving you probly won't notice much difference at all leaving it off......in highway driving your motor is going to run at a higher rpm and it will cost you some mileage.
Good luck

yah the tranny tends to mess up when it is on. It seems to shift a lot quicker with it off and when its on it is like it is reving a lot higher then shifting really hard. Do any of yall have a shift improver? I think it is a B and M its like 35 bucks. Wondering if that improves shifts cuz right now it shifts really hard

What's the truck/engine/tranny? There may be something going on that we could help you with.
