Cruise Control
Baji would you happen to know which fuse runs that cruisecontrol. Is it on a serperate fuse all together becuase everything else works. One day it just stopped working. This was a very long time ago . I amnot a big cruise control guy but figured with the total knowledge in the forum someone might be able to give insight such as your self.
Alright, well a possibility could be the cruise deactivation switch which is located on the brake master cylinder. It should be right on your firewall. My switch is about 3/4" thick at eyeball glance. If that's not unplugged, it could be the actual cruise control switch on the steering wheel. The service tech I talked to said there is a fuse but it would be connected to something else as well - meaning that another electrical piece would not work. Hope this helps.

Quite some time ago the cruise control just quit working on my 1993 Mercury Villager minivan. I purchased and replaced the switch on the steering wheel and it has been fine ever since. I'd try that, particurlarly if you can replace it without taking off the steering wheel.

didn't you guys have the recall done on the deactivation switch??? remember, the master cyl would leak through and get on the switch, and in some cases catch fire. even when the truck was turned off. they just cut the power wire from the switch and installed a fuse right there. that way, when, and it will, blow, it won't catch on fire...
All the information I wrote up top came from the Ford service department at a local dealership. However, if you mean "shorted" as in the cruise control turns off then that's corrrect. Cruise control should be turned off by both the button and depressing the brake pedal. If "when it is not" means that it doesn't work period, then I have no clue. Unfortunately I don't know much in depth about the system.

Most likely it is a bad deactivation switch on the master cylinder. There was a recall on then as stated earlier, get the thing replaced right away. Mine went bad and did leak and it did catch fire, if I had not been in my drivway I would have lost my Ex to the fire gods.
It's a very easy fix to do yourself, if for some reason your Ex isn't covered under the warranty. But I'd check to see f yours is a recall unit and if it has been performed.

The rotary slide switch <commonly knows as the clock spring> inside the steering wheel will also cause the cruise to not work. Sometimes the horn won't blow either which is a good indicator also. You could also get a blinking airbag light from the same part. Jim
