The banks power pack comes with a EGT guage. That EGT guage is installed in the first bend in the down pipe.
In the manual they state that the EGT guage should never get over 1100 degrees. They do not mention the amount of temp drop from the manifod to the down pipe.
Say whatever you want about Banks, but I tend to trust their research.
well noone ever says anything bad about banks except for cost :P, yeah i'll probably put my EGT gauge in the downpipe bend (once i order the gauges!) and use the 1100F mark as my gauge
I have the power pack installation guide at home. I'm pretty sure that was the figure they put in there, but I'll double check it when I get home tonight and confirm with you then.
That would be a great comparison. Not that the gauges don't mean anything, but if you could do both locations on the same truck, same mods, etc., there really couldn't be any arguing that. Unless you would lie to us for some reason.
Here is the excpert from the Banks manual regarding EGT temps when the pyrometer is installed post turbo as it is in their kit
Use your pyrometer gauge to monitor exhaust gas
temperature (EGT) in the engine. At idle, EGT will be very
low, perhaps only 300°F. As the engine accelerates and is
under load, the EGT rises. The safe maximum for the EGT
is 1050°F. The highest EGT occurs under maximum load at
full throttle, such as climbing a steep grade with a heavily
laden vehicle. If the vehicle reaches maximum EGT during
these conditions, downshift to reduce the load, or back off
the throttle. CAUTION: Exceeding 1100°F can cause
engine damage.
My truck was run with the stock airbox for 100,000 miles with no ill effects. The turbo compressor wheel looks like new.

I have a Banks kit w/ the EGT probe in the dp at the bend out of the turbo. My Banks manual concurs w/ WR's info. I've hit 1050 hauling several times and 1100 once unintentionally, with no problems. But I back off when it gets that hot and try not to push it. Level cruising at 75/80 hauling 7-8Klb usually stays around 600-700 post turbo. One of these days I'd like to install an EGT pre turbo, but to be safe you need to remove the exhaust manifold. Don't want to get any drill/tap shavings in the turbo.
