Talking Surprise Surprise!!

My 4" exhaust came in today and while under the truck taking stuff apart I noticed that what I thought was a stock down pipe isn't. And the new mid pipe fits it just right. That saved a lot of work. In the pic below there is a plugged hole in that dp. Is that where I should be putting the thermo? Providing the threads match of course.

Anybody want to make an offer on a MBRP downpipe? It's not stainless.

THe plugged hole is the exhaust gas temperature, you will get a more accurate reading pre-turbo. I'am sure others will chime in on the location.

In the exhaust manifold is more accurate, safty wise you can put it in the down pipe incase it broke and then it will destry the turbo but is less accurate. My opnion, put it in the exhaust manifold if your alright for that one in a million chance of it snapping off and destrying the turbo.

How much of a temp difference is there between the dp and the manifold? Very tempting to put it there just because it's all set up for it.

Rule of thumb is 900* post turbo max and 1250* pre
There can be a 3-400* change in temp

when you install your pyrometer (EGT guage), put it in the exhaust manifold. It is the proper place for it amd it will give you the most accurate reading without any guess work.

If you really really do not want to drill into your manifold, I am going to be in Boise sometime next week. I'll drill and tap the hole for you in trade for an IPA.

Let me know in advance and I'll pack my drill motor and tap that I used for my install.

Nuts! I'm not currently in Boise. Working in Las Vegas for a few months. I don't suppose you'll be coming through here? Thanks for the offer though. With all the pro-manifold responses here that's probably what I'll do. Saw a thread or site with picks of that install awhile back. Just have to find it again.

Just so everyone knows. The downpipe I don't need is just the upper part. It seems that downpipe kits come with a second piece which connects to the cat. Don't know if a stock exhaust will work with just this piece. Maybe a sleeve/adapter or band clamp would make it work.

I think it's already spoken for though. Not 100% yet on that.

Foreman, where did you get those numbers? They are different than the ones I saw somewhere years ago. If they're right I should've toasted mine a long time ago. Its nothing for me to see 900 and I see 1100-1200 pretty easily while towing, mine is a little closer to turbo than the one in the pic though.

I agree with the manifold placement. I also have heard the same number that foreman mentions for the 3-400 difference between the minifold and DP placements.

I'm not doubting the manifold is a better place just that 3-400 sounded a bit high, I hope so anyway. Back when I installed mine I found limits somewhere that actually stated #'s for manifold placement and also for 3"-6" post turbo. They weren't that far off, but of course I can't find it now so this is all just hearsay I guess.
If it was say 300 off, that means I run 1500 quite often. How long would you expect it to last under these conditions? I'm at 170k now.

I hit 1500* pulling 18k up a 6% grade, I have it preturbo and have 250,000 miles. Intercooler is hopefully going in this summer.

Someone has actually installed both a pre and post turbo egt gauge and saw that large of a difference in temps.

Most gauge manufacturers that use color coding for diesel engines on their Pyrometers go with (pre turbo) yellow = 1050-1250 & red = 1250 and up; (post turbo) yellow = 900-1050 & red = 1050 and up. FYI
