I have a '97 F-250 with a manual 5 speed that has an accelerator pedal that seems to over-react to the slightest movement. I have no trouble in cruise or when pulling a load. It does have a TSP chip in it but I still get a surge at any setting when running empty. I put a dealer bought cps in it about 10,000 miles ago (long before I had this problem.) I have been told that this truck has a pedal position sesor instead of a throttle position sensor. Do I have a bad pedal position sensor and do I have to replace the whole pedal assembly or just the sensor?
you have to replace the whole thing and its an expensive unit to replace, is it sensitive when you first press on it or is it sensitive in certain spots.
Try removing the chip you have, it maybe a bad side effect of the chip and a few people on here has had a chip go bad or have side effects
You can modify your pedal to be less sensitive. Do a search on the hot pedal mod. If you take the pedal assembly off you'll see two bolts holding the TPS on the assembly. Take those bolts out and "hog out" the holes. Normally you would rotate the TPS about 5* twards the driver to get better response, in your case you can rotate it away from you. And also, check your IVS switch on that same assembly. You should be able to press the throttle with the truck off and hear a "click" If you don't, that may be your problem. There is a metal tab that presses the switch when you are off the throttle, and when you press the throttle it disengages that switch to let the truck throttle up. I would check that. Good luck man.
