Some of the symptoms I know of are (the bucking bronco) or it will will just plain die or refuse to start. I just replaced mine as my problems were intermittant. You'll probably get a more exact answer in the morning when everyone really knowledgable signs on.
Also ,I was told to keep a spare in the glovebox because you never know when it'll fail and it will fail eventually. It's pretty simple to change .I got mine at the international dealer and saved about 80$ over the ford prices. I've been told you can get them on E-bay for about 50$ if you have time to wait. Just make sure you get the blue 1 as it's supposed to be the new and improved version.
well the jury is still out on the blue CPS especially if you have a chip. other symptoms of CPS can include no start, momentary stall (bucking), complete stall with or without restart, rough running and alot of other weird things.
Well mine has like a fluttering sensation, more so when under a load, and then just looses power, first thought it was a fuel problem, changed fuel filter but that did not seem to fix the problem.
Do have a superchip in it but when started having the problem i put it back to factory settings, even though its having this problem, the superchip seems to help it some, guess thats due to the extra horsepower compensating to make it run little different verses not having it on.
Am at my witts end with it, even the Ford dealership has looked at twice and not sure what the problem is, of course they dont look at it for nothing so trying to get an idea from here before i take it back and spend small fortune for trial and error.
Thanks for your replies..
I would get a cam sensor off ebay. should be able to get one for $70 or under. try that first. If its doesn't work you now have a spare for it DOES go out. and it will! keep it in your glove box. the flutter is not a common symptom but a CPS has done stranger things!
Why don't you swap out your CPS first just to eliminate that possibility? Even if it doesn't fix it, you have a spare which you should keep in the truck anyway. Good luck.
I think I also have problem with my CPS on the '97 F350. The truck will only cut off if I have a trailer hooked behind it. Even though it shuts off, it always restarts. I am thinking that the trailer is grounding out the CPS. Is this correct or am I missing something.

well that would be one of the strangest symptoms I would have ever heard of but I suppose its possible. I can't fathom what else it could be. course I also can't fathom it is the CPS either.
when my cam sensor went bad i thought it was either the glow plugs were goin bad or the relay, it would start in cold weather, but it would have to wait for 3 key turns and waiting for the "wait to start" to go off, and this is only in like 30 degrees, normally only under about 15 i have to do it twice, but it would start when it was plugged in.... my dad mentioned that this happened once before, so we brought it into ford, cam sensor... lol, truck runs fine now

I don't think it could be grounding it out but the extra lights, brakes ect could put enough extra load on the elec. system that the CPS is glitching due to a minor voltage fluctuation as it is voltage specific (the way I understand it)
the blue cam sensor is not a new and improved piece, its a cam sensor from a dt466,it has ihc numbers stamped in the body. im currently running that very sensor with a dp tuner chip. the jury is still out on my position of its performance.
