howdy, i recently had speed needle trouble myself. i have a 93 f350 4x4. when you say quit,, like dead? my needle would jump from running at 70 to 75 then 55 then back to 70 very spuratically. turns out, my speed sensor is on the diff and reads a toothed gear just behind he ring gear. well the carrier bearings were so bad, when i pulled the carrier out, the pass side bearings fell out. cage and all. the carrier had 1/4" play left to right. muy malo (very bad), that explained the speedo jumping. there is a mag pickup on the diff and a plastic connector. hope its something simple. marco.
I recently had and still have that problem. I have an '86 F-250 4x4 diesel with rebuilt 6.9 engine, transfer case, new radiator, brakes, calipers, front end, u-joints, guages, etc, etc. The only thing I haven't done is the rear end. Oh Yeah! spedo drive gear.
What happened was the plastic drive gear located on the output shaft of the transfer case has completely worn out and so has the smaller cable drive gear.
I found this out by taking the cable out and finding that it had a worn tip. I bought a new cable and installed it thinking that it would fix the problem. Unfortunatly, not. I followed the cable to the top of the output shaft on the transfer case and removed the clip and cable. Everything looked good from there. I then went little further and removed the bolt that held in the cable drive gear assembly. I cleaned all the crap off and noticed that the removable gear at the bottom was worn. I then stuck my finger in the opening on the transfer case to check the main drive gear on the output shaft and noticed that it too was very worn. It was loaded with all the black worn plastic particles from the two drive gears. I do not have the time to drop the drive shaft and remove the large bolt on the yolk at this time.
I posted about the problem on this site and was happy to get the response on how to fix it.
As I mentioned about removing the yolk, seal, and bearing, the plastic gear should slide out. You then need to count the teeth on both gears and find the appropriate replacement. I do have the link to the supplier and I will post it asap.
I hope this helps.
Great site and thanks to all for the very informative and continuous stream of posts.
