Park won't lock

Hi, when I select the park, the transmission does not lock, I have to use the parking brake. If I wiggle the arm then it sometimes lock in. I checked at the transmission and if I play with it, it disengage or engage the lock.

Is the problem in the linkage or in the transmission?

Also, if have to push on the the selector to get the start switch to kick in.

Thanks

what year is your truck i know the 92 and up steering colume (sorry for spelling no good at it)was bad for the scews coming loose on the shifter shaft and where the cable bracket bolts to it and the cables would size up to try to pull the cable off at the tras. and put it in park and then hold the cable up to the leaver and see if it lines up with the shiffter in park if it dosent then your problem is in the cable or the shifter but thats only if your truck is a 92 and up

Automatic Transmission Shift Rod or Shift Cable Adjustment... C6 and E4OD

1 Raise vehicle on jack stands or hoist. (I'd block well and scramble under)

2 From inside the vehicle, place the select lever in D/C6 and OD/E4OD . Hang a three

pound weight on the selector lever ( six pack still full)

3 Remove shift cable from the transmission lever ball stud/shift rod.

4 Pull down the lock tab on the shift cable body.

5 Position transmission lever in drive position. This is three detents from the front-most

lever position with the first position counting as one.

6 Connect the cable and end fitting to the transmission lever ball stud/shift rod.

7 Push up on the lock tab to lock the cable in the correctly adjusted position or tighten nut

and bolt.

8 Remove jack stands and lower vehicle from hoist. Remove three pound weight from

column shift select lever.

9 After making adjustment, check for Park engagment. Check the transmission control lever

in all detent positions with the engine running to make sure correct detent/transmission

actions, readjust if necessary. Reset the PRNDL indicator as required.

CAUTION:
Under no circumstances will it be permissible to adjust the cable/shift rod in any position

other than D for C6 or OD for E4OD.

Now all should be ok if it is in PARK and everything works, remove blocks.

Road test...................(drink warm beer)

I will check this morning but it looks like there is no adjustment on the rods?
Truck is 1991, automatic, with over drive push button on the dash.

I'll be back and let you know

Wink

Problem fixed, the mechanic adjusted the arm at the ajustment slot on the linkage. Park is good, starts without wiggling the shifter, not scared anymore that I would forget to press on the parking brake or someone that moves my truck forget to put on the parking brakes.
