My 1990 Bronco has a 302 with 2 1/4" dual exhaust on it.It still has the stock manifolds on it,but I'm planning an engine&tranny swap soon anyway,so I won't be adding headers.Headers will help make it breathe easier, but they are prone to leak,so you have to tighten header bolts up every so often, unless you like hearing that ticking noise from an air leak(s).I know going with a larger diameter single exhaust is cheaper, and also gives extra power, but there is something about having a true dual exhaust.....even without headers, the Flowmaster Series 50 mufflers make it sound REALLY good.Plus, the extra power is good. For a stock,or mildly modified 302,if you decide on duals, keep the diameter size at 2 1/4".Stock 302's need all the low end grunt they can get....
I just put dual exhaust on my 89 Bronco today (302 motor). I bought a pair of FlowTech Shortie headers from Summit, $189.00 with shipping and handling. The exhaust is custom fabricated 2 1/2 with Flow Master Mufflers and 3 inch chrome tips. A new bung was installed between the two pipes as close to the original position as possible for the O2 sensor. The custom exhaust cost $405.00. I think its worth every penny of it. There is a definite increase in the upper RPM range and it really sound great. I can't say that my gas mileage will increase. It's really hard to keep your foot out of the gas now. Those Flow Master's really sound sweet!
