Heater Core Size Issue

My first question is, why does no one make the correct size heater core for my truck. All the heater cores found, except 1 were last revised in 82 with the part number E2TH-18476-BA. The heater core in my truck is larger and has the part number E3TZ-18476-F. The only place that can get the larger heater core is the Ford dealer.

My second issue is that this is the 3rd heater core in 3 years to start leaking on me. All three were just out of warrently (from Ford). The last one bulged out on the side for some reason (the mixture was new and correct).

I don't want to have to add spacers to the heater core to make it fit correctly. I have also tried Blue Oval Parts and they only have the 82 model heater core. By the way the truck is an 84, non- AC, High Output model. The motor was also just replace last fall and all new coolant was used.

Thanks,
Mudman

I would assume the "high output" feature is what's giving you the grief. If you are having that much trouble, and the spacers would not be that big of a deal, I think I would go with the smaller one myself.

After calling around for the last few days, I decided to go with an O'Reilly Heater core. When I called, the specs for the core were smaller that the one in my truck, but when I compared the cores they had the same dimensions. The only problem was the fittings interfering with the edge of the heater box slightly. Measured the new core and it was off by the amount I needed. For some reason they listed the core as smaller in their book. I am still puzzled by the different part numbers.

As mentioned, there is the standard core, a/c, and the high output core, non a/c. If you were able to take the core out from behind the glove box, it was a standard, if you had to take the air box out under the hood, you have the high output heater.

My 82 did have the high output and was able to get a core from adv. auto. It went right in and it was a modine. Was good for many years untill I converted to AC and had to change the box.
Hope this helps
Ken

The part number differences were for high out put heaters. The high Output option had a revision between 82 and 83 for some reason the 82 part number measures( 7 x7.25 x 2) and the 83 part number measures (7.25 x 7.75 x 2). My truck had the High Output option due to size and it being stated on the outside of the heater box under the hood. Every part store I called listed their size as the 82. The only exceptions were the Ford dealer and a radiator shop which listed the part size as the larger 83.

If you put a resrictor in the pressure side hose at the intake manifold the cores will last longer. Thats what Ford used to do for the interceptors. I do it to all of mine and it doesn't affect the heat output. It is just a slug of metal with a small hole in it for the coolant to flow through. about 3/8''. I have seen them in plastic also.
