yep its a c6, so at 60mph on the freeway its at a million rpms. i've heard of swapping the gears in the rear end. anybody done this?
also is there a component of the transmission called a modulator or something? a device which tells it what rpms to switch gears at? because i live in an area with alot of hills and it will kick into 3rd when i believe it should be in 2nd. i ocassionally move the shifter down to 2nd when i need it, but its a nuissance. first gear is the same way. first shifts to second at about 5 mph, and second shifts to third at like 15. i want this to be more like 15mph, and 30mph. and have a third gear that cruises on the freeway at 70mph with the same rpms it would at 45 mph.
i want the same thing.....i have a 4.56 rear end in mine..bought it like that...and man it suxs..cause theres no street use...someone please help...i have a 3.50 rear gear...how much would it help..also can i put an overdrive on the tranny...
i got some 3.00:1's or 3.50:1's id swap for some 456's or 410's for a nine inch. swapin gears isnt that hard take off the wheels and drums. on the axle flange theres a hole look threw there you'll see 4 bolts remove them. pull axles.then go under truck remove the bolts around the center cection and tap the bolts in remove the center chunk. to install reverse the same
Dave The tranny sounds like it is working like it is supposed to while shifting upward. All non-overdrive trannys have a 1 to 1 output.
The modulator valve is vacuum controlled by a small tube running from the intake to the valve. You can pull it off to first check if it has any oil in it and to reach the adjusting screw inside. Be careful of hot exhaust pipes nearby. Keep notes of your correction and turn by full and half turns and finally by quarter turns.
The 9" is highly sought after and even a highly modified version is run in all of the NASCAR race cars today. Most of our half tons run the 28 spline axle. The 31 spline was introduced to the trucks a few years later and cannot be interchanged. As long as you have the center chunks with the same spline count it is easily a job that can be completed in an hour or less. I run a 3.00 behind my FE/C6 and tow with it.
9" Rear Axles offered ratios from 2.47-1 to 5.56-1
The most common ratio in cars is 3.00-1 (VIN plate axle code is: 1)
31 spline 9" rear axles were OPTIONAL from 1968. Many of these early 31 spline axles from 1968/72 years have a 9 3/8" ring gear, but the rear axle is still considered a 9 inch.
9 inch rear ends with the 9 3/8" ring gear and 31 spline axle shafts use different internal parts than a 28 spline and will NOT interchange.

i'm slightly confused, can you go into further detail? which intake? the main one beneath the carburetor? what will adjusting it do? will it cause my 2nd gear to wrap out a little more before it kicks into third?
Yes, The one on top of the engine and under the carb.
The valve that you described is a small can looking device on the passenger side of the tranny. It should have a rubber hose about 5\16" across that runs up to and connects to the engine intake. It is vacuum controlled and gets the vacuum from the intake.
When you pull the hose from the modulator and look for oil, you car checking the diaphragm to see if it is still intact. Inside the hole where the tube connects some of the valves have an adjusting screw.
Dennis or Bill da Numbers man should have a description link for you to look at.
Let's get you caught up before going forward any further. Let us know when you have found these items.
This is the vacuum line to the modulator. You can see the manifold tree that the line hooks to, yours may not be exactly the same but should be similar (this is a 429). The modulator line is the one that's bolted to the back of the motor here, the steel line that has a rubber hose where it hooks to the manifold pretty much in the center of the pic:
This is the modulator itself:
The trans in this pic is out of the car and partially disassembled, there's no pan on it which is what would be bolted to the flange shown in the pic just below the modulator.
If you want to trade those 4.56's for some 3.0's let me know!!!! I've got 2 or 3 sets of 2.7 to 3.5 gear sets around here, and also have some 6.33's and 6.50's for those "special" Saturday nights!~!!!!! Love them 9" Fords, just find another center section and install most any gear set you want in them!!!! Not a better or stronger rear end made for a 2wd pickup or car that I know of!!!! (now the Dana guys are gonna get me!!!)
