Shifting mph
Shifting mph
When driving my M5OD Ranger, i notice that:
1st gear - 10 - 20mph
2nd gear - 20 - 30mph
3rd gear - 30 - 40mph
4th gear - 40 - 60mph
5th gear - 60+mph
These are the apx mph that i shift into each gear. I was curious why 5th gear handles 60 - 120mph. Seems kind of odd to me. I mean i know it's normal, but why arent all of the gears spaced apart to complete the full mph it can go?

The point of a transmission is to keep the vehicle in the power band (or near it) and below redline at every speed. You can shift at higher speeds for each gear and you will get to speed more quickly, but you will burn more gas.
What do you mean the "full mph it can go"? Do you think the truck will handle 120+? It will certainly not be safe at those types of speeds on normal roads.

I have 32's and 3.73's with a 5-spd, I can go to about 35 in 1st, 55 in second, and after that I'm not too sure. At least 80 in 3rd, because I know I have downshifted to 3rd to get around trucks on the interstate and am going at least 80 when I get around. 4th will take me as fast as she'll go. So far about 115. I don't use 5th for accelerating hard because 4th gives better acceleration and will get me to my top speed.
your factory rev limiter will tell you, trust me!, 1st 35,2nd 60, 3rd 85, 4th 110, 5th gas gear, 5th will actually slow me down, if im running it hard i never get to use it, the truck seems to shut down the power anything over 110, wish i could turn it off!

5th gear is your cruising gear. It's basically like a direct connection to your engine, and you won't get much power at all when you're in 5th. I've been cruising in 5th on many a hilly road, and sometimes I'll have to downshift to avoid slowing down (at least, when I started driving stick.. now I know how to anticipate...) As to your speeds when you shift, all I can say is listen to your engine. It'll tell you when it's time to shift.
