On both my bumpers all I used to cut them out was a #30 Black and Decker grinder from walmart and $5-10 worth of cutoff wheels. Granted it takes a while, but its actually a lot more accurate then torching or plasma cutting by hand. This way you dont have to grind off all the slag afterwards.
I'm still looking at doing this at some point, when I can take the truck off the road for awhile and take the bumper off to get measurements (winter isn't the best time).
I just wish my welder was a little better and/or good welders weren't so expensive Of course, for what a pre-built ranch hand style bumper costs, I could buy a nice welder.
Josh, I have a 90 F-250 EXT I have been looking at custom bumpers for, your bumpers are right on the money. You did a Fantastic Job on yours, your talented and skilled. Good On You!!
ok but i thought since this board is all about "searching the forums" for the topic your interested in instead of posting a new thread i figured it would be alright (this is coming from a board owner myself vB-PBWoW Skin Home)
Easy dude, I'm just messing with you. I'd rather see someone search and dig up old threads for info instead of posting a new one each enad every time the same question is asked. I was just saying that you need to search out and contact Josh since he designed and built that bumper for his truck.
If that's the case, then come up with a design, fabricate it, put a price on it, patent it as your own, market it, sell it, and send me a free prototype to test out!
I am also a senior in high school and i go to a vocational school for half the day and i go for welding and fab. i just got done with my front bumper that i was building and i turned out great. like josh i also am dirt poor and cant aford much at all and i built this bumper for $35. i used a lot of metal i had laying around my shed too though. I started out with a I beam as the base and made side suports and used 1/8" steel on the outside. It took LOTS of grinding and it did take a while but it turned out good.
this is before i painted it. i used under body paint that i picked up from farm and fleet. If you do nice even coats it turns out great.
