i've been looking for a truck and i am way to picky to find exactly what i want so i want to know how hard it would be to convert to what i want.
i've been looking for a mid 70's f-250 with the 460 and standard 4 speed transmision for less than 2000$ all i can find is autos with the c-6. so my question is how hard would it be to convert to standard and about how much would it cost?
I think it would be pretty easy honetly...if you pull up the carpet you'll probably find a plate covering the opening for the shifter already. All you need is the right tranny, bellhousing and other associated parts (clutch, clutch cylinder ect.) and you'll probably need to have a new drive shaft made to compensate for the difference in size. Basically it boils down to how much do you want to spend? You could always find an old U-haul truck as well and pull the box off and put a bed on...most of those were stick and they sell them all the time.

I bet it could be done by getting another truck in rough shape but with all the right parts. A good four speed 435NP transmission alone could be $250-400 and then you need a new clutch while its out another $100.
Things that come to mind are: Foot pedal assembly, Verticle linkage rod(you'll need to cut the hole in cab floor), Pivot shaft( one side mounts to motor w/ brkt and Frame w/ another brkt), Horizontal linkage rod (pushes on Thoughout arm), there's a spring in that area to keep the linkage from floating around, Keep an eye on trans tailshaft length as it may dictate drive shaft lenth, probably need a removable floor pan center hump cover ( some 2wd may need to be cut out), And I am sure there is something else. Anyway another truck would the way to go.
I've found probably a half dozen over the years in '70's Lincolns. Usually never paid more than $250 for the whole car. It would need different motor mounts, maybe exhaust manifolds. One tougher part is finding a manual fly wheel for a 460 as few factory 460 were manuals. I think they were in f-350s and E-350 vans too.
I am assuming you're looking for a 2wd truck? 460s in 4wd did not come from the factory. But the conversion is very common. If it is for a 4wd then vans work great as they have a rear sump oil pan, but a goofy dip stick.
390 flywheel is the same to fit a 460
and the manifolds will fit but you have to trim the frame on pass side about .5 of an inch to clear.
a 429 will not fit unless you have the crank machined for the pilot bearing
wow this is starting to sound like a huge project. i would like the 4x4. it would be very helpfull due to the fact that i live in new england. the main reason i wanted the 460 is because of the ability to build it up so big and i wand lots of power. i supose it would just be easier to get a 351 or something with the 4x4 and stick shift already and stick with that.
Well,
If you want power dont entriely discount the FE block like the 390 for that. Theyre a stout work horse of an engine and are practically bullet proof if built right. If you build it out a bit you could end up with as much as a 428 or so.
