How often does a torque converter need replaced?

How often does a torque converter need replaced?
I'm rebuilding my dad's '91 F150. 5.0, AOD, 2wd. The tranmission leaks badly, and has +150K miles on it so we're going to get it rebuilt. What about the torque converter? Do the have seals that go bad, or do they themselves go bad?

If you are getting a rebuild, do the converter. Like the guy said like taking a shower and putting your dirty skivvies back on. The converter often has junk collected in it from the worn out bits and pieces of the tranny. Why put a suspect, probably dirty converter on a "new" tranny?
Converters last usually as long as the tranny but a lot depends on maintenance, abuse and design. NO POWER BRAKING, that is abuse.
