I was going down the highway when my '95 F-150 started shaking itself to peices. I've heard that troque converter chatter is a common problem on F-150s with the AODE tranny.
What causes torque converter chatter and how do I get it fixed?
The converter clutch on an AODE is bad about shuddering on engagement if the fluid is old. Changing the fluid should solve the problem. However, if the converter clutch is shuddering continuously under load then it is slipping and has burnt the clutch. If this is the case then you will need at least a new converter if not an overhaul.
Then again, an engine miss can cause the exact same symptom. It takes an experienced tech to be able to tell the difference in a miss and a converter shudder.
I'm pretty sure the clutch is burnt. If it was the engine missing it would do it all the time, not only at higher speeds. Also I've been getting codes for the clutch soleniod.
How much will a new or rebuilt torque converter cost me?
No, it won't necessarily do it all the time. I get cars/trucks in my shop regularly that have a miss that only happens with the converter clutch engages in O/D. This is VERY common.
How much for a converter, installed, will depend on the shop and your area. We do AODE converters for $295 plus $276 labor and $25 for fluid. Total is $596.
