I'm cheap.

I want 33" tires. I think they will help with the high rpms on the highway. I was wondering if a stock 87 f150 4x4 with dual shocks in front can pull this off. I think not. I will probably have to go with at least a 2" kit. I dont want it to high cause then I cant get in and out of the bed or cab very easily. I've had 4" lifts in the past & would rather have a smaller lift. The one compromise is that I'm getting 33" tires, no if &'s or butts. I like the 2" lift cause the ttb stays put. The 4" it gets lowered & is more costly with the labor & extra material. Whats your opinions on this. Also, my front double shocks are a concern of mine. The last truck I had with them this way rode stiff. It rides ok now, but they are probably fatigued. Would it be better to just take a shock of & run a single up front. If so which one should I remove? I think the front shock should come off. Whats your opinions to all these questions. 1 more thing. What lift kit should I get a 2 or 4". What brand. Thanks.

I use to own a 87 F150 4x4 with the dual setup up front and it rode fine but i did have new Skyjacker shocks too but it's a truck it's not gonna have a soft ride like a car and actually a 4 inch lift on your truck is not gonna go up that high. And yes that dual setup will handle 33's with altho i had only 31's cause that's all i could afford at that time. What are your plans for this truck just driving it on the street or doing some off roading? To raise it 4 inches you'll need a 4 inch Center axle drop down bracket, 4 inch RA's drop brackets but if you want articulation then you'll also need longer RA's and as for the back you can do it cheaply by using a 4 inch block but not recommended just spend the money and buy 4 inch lift Leaf packs and you'll need 4 extended brake lines. I'm sure someone else will correct or add to what i have said. There is a chance you might need longer DS's not sure but i'm sure someone else will know.

Get the 33x9.50 or 33x10.50s on stock rims, and you probably won't need anything. Several years ago, one of the magazines did a before and after of an f150 with narrow 33s on the stock susp. It looked goofy, but I think it cleared ok.

I've seen a couple 80-90s model F150 4x4s with 33x12.50s on them.
IT doesn't look like there is a lot of room in the wheel well, but no rubbing when driving, turning, or hitting bumps.
Now off road, bouncing around and turning, I'm sure it'd rub on somthing, but I'd go for it.

Now thats an idea that i was actually thinking about. I have a little rust around the wheel wells & cut outs will solve 2 problems at once. Only problem is I dont like how far they stick out. I'm leaning towards the 2" kit or eaton detroit springs got a 3" but there pricey.

From what I hear putting 33's on an 87 and up truck can run into some bumper clearance issues sinc ethe bumper wraps around on those trucks.

Mind you I have no direct experience putting larger tires on a truck made after 1986, but it is something that i've heard multiple times.

That is usually the problem. The solution would be to either cut the bumper or space it out with a couple of washers.

You could just cut the fenders without getting the bushwacker flares. Many people have done this before, and have had good luck with it, just take the time to mask the area and mark what will be cut. After you cut it, cut little slits in the metal about 1/2" or so, and roll it in. So if the tires rub when flexing, they won't get cut.

I ran my old 86 with 35's and never hit the bumper. I tore up the tires on the frame but no bumper. oh yeah 86 was still the box body I think in 87 they changed to the more rounded front end.

Yeah, the 86 still has the non wrap around bumper. I ran my 85 on 35's and 3 or 4" of lift and never had a problem, but from what I hear this would be a major malfunction on an 87 and up.

Man I could care less about the bumper. I will shim it out or something. I dont want any rubbing. A little on the rad arm is ok, but I dont want to spend a lot of money if possible. I was thinking that a 2 1/2" lift would probably work cause I have 31 10.50 15's on now with no rubbing so if the 2 1/2" lift is a true 2 to 2 1/2" then I think it should work. My math skills are'nt the best, but 31+2 = 33. Am I missing something? My only real concern is does this lift mess with the front end at all. Also I read that someone with the 2 1/2 lift had to lower the ttb. If I have to do that then I may as well get the 4".
