Hey guys. I am just curious how a 2wd with a locker performs in in mud, snow, and dirt. I guess I am asking will it make a world of difference or is a 2wd still a 2wd? I hear a lot of people say these new suv's(Saturn VUE, Honda CRV, etcc) AWD systems are crap. Would a 2wd F150 with a locker perform better than one of these SUV's?
With a locker and running in snow it will be harder to control the truck. With a open diff the non spinning wheel acts as a tracking tire and does not allow the rearend to slide out as much. Again with right tires and drivind it could be jsut as good as a 4x4.
A 2wd with a locker in snow/ice will suck. In mud you will be surprised how well they work, especially if you have the gears and HP to spin the tires an keep 'em cleaned out. I know my '67 in 2wd will go more places than most stock 4x4s that are locked in. Then again I'm locked in the rear with 36" TSLs.

Yes
> or is a 2wd still a 2wd?
Yes, especially when going up a muddy hill. I rather have an open 4x4 going up a muddy hill then a locked 2x4. No compro. 4x4 wins hands down.
I rather have a locked 2x4 then open 2x4 though. Especially on wet grass.

They are nice on road, they can not take the abuse off road. Just look at the RAV4, its rear axle shafts are 1/2" wide if that
Not to mention the 2" of ground clearance.
I have taken my Aerostar AWD places those things could only dream about and that was fairly level farm fields and gravel roads.

Well, for one thing road clearance, two you can hit a bump faster then 5 mph without warping the whole front end or three high center it without totaling the vehicle.
The only recent mini-SUV I have seen worthy off road is the Suzuki.
Well... the driver makes the most difference. a 2wd requires a different driving style than a 4wd off road. First of all, I wouldnt take a 2wd in deep mud, or on serious ice, but in the snow or dirt or sand, I think the 2wd is definitely more fun. If you have a decent set of tires and a durable lift kit, you can keep your speed and momentum up and make your way through all kinds of *****.
keep in mind, however, that a 2wd locker will just get you further away from help before you get stuck :P
I spent 6 years building my truck, and with a locker and mud tires I go "most" places I want to go in 2wd. I could have saved myself a bunch of $$ and not converted it to 4wd
