Thats a nice laptop, I have a compaq, and its pretty good. Heres my new one I got for 700 bucks on sale. Its an acer, and Ive heard mixed stuff about them so I will see how good it ends up being!

it's either the inverter or the backlite, the lcd screen is lite by a small flouresent tube, the inverter powers it, the lcd screen are expensive to replace, upwards of 600-700 dollars, the inverters generally run (depending on the unit) between $20-$100 bucks, some laptops have two back light tubes most only one, the larger screens tend to have two, the red color is usually the tube is failing, just like a flouresent light bulb will fail and dim.
