New to the site and considering a new to me Ford.
I am looking at a VERY clean 2000 Excursion with 107,000 miles! I would like to hear some opinion on how many mile the V10 is expected to go with good care.
This will not be my daily driver but will see some use as the family camping and tow rig. Your thoughts are appreciated.
I talked to many people about the V10's there were a handful that doubted it, but the overwhelming majority loved em. A few ran fleets and said they easily get mid200K or over 300K on them when taken care of. Early years had issues with spitting sparkplugs though. I beleive this was fixed for late 2002/early 2003.
I just bought a mint garage kept 00 X Limited 4X4 in Jan. with 103K on it, the owner had the ball joints and brakes done within the last year and the thing drives like new. I ordered a 99 F250SD in spring 98 when they started taking orders with a V-10 and can tell you with experience that if you ever hear "ticking" with a V-10, or any modular motor for that fact. Shut it off and check for a loose plug.
In 2002, I just got my truck paid off and it was out of warranty and I thought, "Great, now its starts ticking"? A few weeks later she blew a plug out while crusing down the road and took the coil pack with it!
Thats the only potential problems I know of with the V-10.... Also, don't tow a heavy load in overdrive as it will kill the converter first, then the trans. (Found that out the hard way also)!
107k on a 2k - I bought 2001 with 114k and didn't even bat an eye. With proper maintenance, you should easily get 200k-300k.
Rightnow I have 126k on mine.
Thanks for the input I am going to look at again this weekend! A mechanic friend is going to put on it the scanner to see if any codes come up. The records are poor but it really looks great.
