out of an '87 f350 2wd 460/c6 combo, I'm planning on pulling them out as one complete unit. any tips? The truck is getting probably getting hauled off to the scrapper after I pull the stuff, so I can cut/hack away at pretty much anything. Just never pulled an engine before and looking for a few tips from some more experience FTEers
I recently bought some parts from a guy and his buddy that were parting out and scrapping a truck. They took off the hood, removed the radiator and used a sawzall to cut the core support and grille, leaving a hole to pull the engine through. They cut or removed all wiring, hoses, exhaust pipes, throttle/shifter linkage etc. attached to the engine/trans. They took the nuts off the motor mounts, removed the tranny cross member and hooked a chain on the engine toward the rear. At this point they lifted the engine/trans/transfer case and pushed the truck back out of the barn. It took them less than 45 minutes, including dealing with me on some parts. The one guy said they hauled 40,000 lbs of scrap last year so it wasn't the first time they did it.
Make sure whatever you lift the engine/trans with is up to the job. You don't want that massive piece of iron falling on you. Depending on where you're working, you probably don't want to spill fluids all over so you should drain them. I like to put a yoke in the transmission to keep fluid from running out. There is a petcock on the passenger side of the radiator. I hooked a rubber hose on mine to drain into containers for disposal. Make sure all wires, etc are removed or they could hold you up. If you're scrapping it you don't have to be as careful as if you're putting it back together.
