I have a 7.3turbo w/ zf5 tranny and 4x4. I am going to replace the tranny and clutch because they are garbage and figure I should pull the motor while I am at it. I need to replace head gaskets, and all the seals and hoses I can get to .
I was wondering if it is possible to replace the main seals w/out unbolting the bottom end of the motor, just the oil pan. the rear main is a little leaky. Also, how hard is it to replace the seals on the oil cooler?
You will not need to unbolt the bottom end to change the seals. Do not drive the rear seal in too deep, I did that one! I am not sure on the oil cooler but somebody will have a wealth of info on it I'm sure. Good luck!
Oil cooler,With a very slick lube and an arbor press it is easy to do.
I fought mine like a Sumo wrestler and it won.
Then I found some liquid silicone lube and an arbor press and it almost fell together.
With the engine out replacing the front and rear main seals is easy. You will be almost there anyway. Do a careful inspection of the crank and harmonic balancer to see if it is grooved and needs a Speedi Sleeve seal installed.
