I am looking at a 88 with a 7.3 5 speed in it. I see that there is oil on the back of the engine and down by the starter. I am suspecting rear main seal. It looks like I can get the truck bought cheap enough that is will work out for me. HOWEVER, I have never done one before. Any advice. I have pulled the transmission to do a clutch job on a 82 ford 4x4. I just need to pull the flywheel and then the cover off the back of the motor. that is where the seal is, Correct?
Check the valve cover gaskets they can look an awful lot like rear main leaks. And the valley pans of these motors drain down on the bellhousing with spilled fuel and such and they can also look like a rear main. If it is the main you will bw pulling the trans and flywheel because its a one piece seal.
Valley pan was my problem. I've also heard fuel leaks can pick up dirt and look black by the time the reach bottom of motor. Make sure its oil, not diesel.
only if you do the rear main yourself, you have to pull the engine or trans and neither are especially friendly on a budget of any kind. probably more than you will pay for the truck. If its the oil pan seal......again pull engine to do it right. So it had better come to you cheap. also a leaky spot is the oil pressure sending unit passenger rear block area. Suspect that as well. When i installed my turbo my leak nearly went away so i suspect i had a leak somewhere in the oil pressure sending unit.
Thanks for all the replys. I KNOW that two of the injectors are leaking out of the caps therefore for it needs a kit put on it. Hopefully that it is mixing with the dirt and that is the area of the problem. Is the oil pressure sending unit the same place as on my 85 6.9?
I will probably do the rear main myself. Like I said I have done several clutch jobs, only one engine removal and it was a 300 strait six. about half the weight. So I will tackle it from the tranny side. IF need be. Well see
