One of these days, I'm going to put a new clutch in my '92 F250 7.3 deisel and want to fix a leaky rear main seal while the tranny's out. Is it possible to replace it at this time? Do I use a stock replacement seal or is there an after market seal available? Any info is appreciated.
We are using a new seal that has a coating on the metal part that gives better adhesion of the RTV. There has been a study done of vehicles in the field on this adhesion problem and they found that the RTV was sticking to the rear cover but there was no, or very little adhesion to the seal itself so they added a coating (phosphate or phosphorus -- I don't know what it is) to aid adhesion. Check the rear pan radius while you are in there (it may not be the seal at all). It is also sealed with RTV and can be resealed without removing the oil pan if you are careful.
My 7.3 with 60K miles on it has a small rear main leak. Just a few drops when parked. With an auto trans, I'm not willing to deal with it as I can buy lots of oil for far less than the repair cost. I only have the dipstick go down about a quart in 5000 miles so unless I can find some miracle additive to stop the leak, I'm leaving well enough alone.
