Hey guys I have tried to search the engine swap foum but haven't found what I am looking for. I have a 77 f250 crew cab 4x4. I would like to find an overdrive transmission to swap in place of the c6 that is behind the 400 now. I would prefer to keep my married np205 if possible. Money is a factor otherwise I would just put in a gearvenders od unit. Thanks for any suggestions.
Probably the least expensive route would be to install a NV4500 5 speed but only if you can get the transmission for cheap. If you're looking to get your money back through better milage forget it, it will take years.
I was told that some company makes an adapter to add a 700R4 Chevy tranny behind a Ford motor. I know it's a Chevy trans.......but it has overdrive. What's the price tag on the gear vendors?
it cost big bucks to put any overdrive unit in, besides the fact that when rebuild time comes up they are much pricier to repair, stick with the c-6 and you will be money ahead unless gas hits $10 a gallon
If your C6 is in need of rebuilding there are improvements that can be made to it. Wide ratio gears, towing converter, and additional roller thrust bearings can be installed. The bearings will provide an efficiency improvement and the towing converter will lower the highway RPM's. The wide ratio gears will help improve performance and can be coupled with a lower numeric ratio differential to lower highway RPMs even more.
The OD units can be purchased used for $500-1000 and a new unit costs $2000-3000 with installation.

Thanks for the replys. My c6 is in good shape I guess I will keep my eyes open for a used od unit. Any suggestions on the best axle gear ratios? Not sure what is in it right now I'll have to pull a cover and check. Thanks for the info.
You can read the tag on the axle or check the codes on the rating plate or count turns on the wheels. All the info you need is in the Read First: FAQ thread.
I bought my OD unit for $500 on ebay but it has been a while since another one has gone for that price.
